Linking Place, Community and Culture

‘Discovering Southwell’ is an ambitious project to celebrate the people, places, history, culture and nature of Southwell.

It is dedicated to encouraging a deeper connection to Southwell through stories, objects and shared experiences of its past, present and future. It is for everybody who lives, works, trades, visits and enjoys being in Southwell.

To achieve this, we will be building on local enthusiasm and interest. We wish to create a community project for Southwell that links activities and promotes opportunities for active involvement suitable for all, providing both fun and the chance to learn.

We have drawn our inspiration from similar projects that have been created all over the world, including The Landscape Ecomuseum, Parabiago, Italy and Staffin Ceumannan Ecomuseum on Skye, Scotland.

Discovering Southwell is an initiative of Southwell Heritage Trust.

What’s happening now?

The results of the recent public and business surveys, and feedback from focus groups and other meetings, are being evaluated with a view to shaping the future of our programme. We are also getting to know those of you offering to volunteer, your skills and interests, to see how you might contribute to bringing about this ambitious undertaking.

Help shape the future of this project

Questionnaire returns have exceeded expectations as has the number completed online. It has been particularly encouraging to see so many under 16-year-olds expressing their positive views about Southwell. We would like to thank all those who have participated in one way or another and look forward to your continuing support.

Favourite Places, Special Sites Mapping Project

Discovering Southwell is creating a digital map of the places that are special to the people who live, work and visit Southwell.

Maybe there is an ancient tree that is special to you, a site with a significant connection, a beautiful view, a favourite spot to contemplate, a place with a story that captures your imagination or a favourite place to walk your dog? It could be anything, anywhere in the Southwell area.

Contributions from a Mapping Project sessionGET INVOLVED

It really is all about YOU!

Discovering Southwell is all about empowering people to identify and define your own cultural landscape of what matters to you & what you love, and getting people to share that knowledge with each other, working together to celebrate the people, places, history, culture and nature of Southwell.

Some of you may have already added your favourite thing to one of our maps or display boards at one our events. What we are hoping to do is to map more of these special things in the Southwell area and we’d love you to help by sending us your special places.

View the map below to see what other people have added so far.

  • Use the plus/minus icons in bottom left corner of the map to zoom in and see more of the markers.
  • To view the index of places, click the icon with an arrow in the top left corner.
  • To view a larger size map, click the icon in the top right corner.

Send us your own ‘where and why’ at events@discoveringsouthwell.org.uk and we’ll add it to the map so everyone can share what it is that makes Southwell special.

Get creative, take a photo, write a poem about the site and send us those too?

Follow our mapping project on Facebook, Twitter and on Victoria’s blog.
